The historic library at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens includes almost 800 volumes that were personally owned and used by James Deering. Many include his signature in the first few pages and all are on exhibit in Vizcaya's first floor Library. Authors collected by Mr. Deering include Mark Twain, Immanuel Kant, James Russell Lowell, Robert Lewis Stevenson, Edith Wharton, Washington Irving, Bret Harte, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Theodore Dreiser, O Henry, Sir Walter Scott, H. G. Wells, G. K. Chesterton, Joseph Conrad, Victor Hugo, and Honore de Balzac. The collection includes books of contemporary literature, poetry, travel guides, encyclopedias, and political theory.
